Indonesia's government plans to release a tax policy on nickel exports in the third quarter of this year, a senior official said on Monday, Aug 1, 2022, as authorities seek to boost export revenues while encouraging more domestic production of high-value products.
Indonesia, once a major exporter of nickel ore, banned exports of unprocessed nickel in 2020 to attract investment in its smelting industry, but much of the development has focused on the production of nickel pig iron (NPI) and nickel-iron, which are relatively low in nickel.
Septian Hario Seto, deputy coordinating minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs, said in an interview that taxes would be levied on NPI and nickel-iron. He declined to give details of the planned tax rate, but said the government would base it on nickel prices as well as the price of coal, which is used as energy in production.
