Indonesia and Malaysia have raised purity standards for imported copper and copper alloy scrap, requiring lower levels of impurities in imported materials. The overall goal of the new regulation is to promote the legal import of non-ferrous metal waste while protecting the environment from harmful substances in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. Following China's implementation of stricter environmental legislation standards in November 2020, ASEAN countries have also raised import standards.
