The Alaska copper smelter, which has been idle since 2000, is back online and is expected to be fully operational by July and reach its target of 300 tonnes of copper per day.
So far, Chinese investor ---- Danyuan Copper Resources has put in half of the money ($6 million).
Zhang Wen, general manager of Danyuan Copper Resources, talked about the project.
"By the end of July this year, our smelter will be operational and in the initial phase, we will treat 300 tons of copper waste from the mine," he said.
Minister of State Gombo, who is in charge of presidential affairs and oversees the implementation of the government's program, warmly welcomed the cooperation between China and Zimbabwe.
"I would like to thank Dansuan for working with us and rebuilding the smelter, and the Second Republic wants to see all mining operations back up and running," he said.
The governor of Cima Province, Mary Mliswa, said the project would create more local jobs.
"The project is key to boosting the GDP of our province, which we are committed to developing into an economic powerhouse of Zimbabwe."
