On 4 July 2022, Brasil announced that its 100% owned Piaui nickel-cobalt laterite project has started continuous nickel production after an 18-month construction and commissioning period.
The first nickel hydroxide product was produced by the world's first independent laterite nickel heap leaching operation, the company said in a media statement. The initial production of the PNP1000 will be increased to 1400 tonnes of NHP nickel per year, the first step towards higher productivity later. PNP1000 is the Piaui nickel project's initial small-scale commercial production project.
Brazilian Nickel said its annual production guidance for 2022 is 300 tonnes of nickel and 3 tonnes of cobalt, while it expects annual production guidance for 2023 to be 1,400 tonnes of nickel and 35 tonnes of cobalt.
